The Start of the Legend

To go back to the beginning, we have to go back to 1986. At this point, the company’s primary involvement in the marine field was their highly successful outboard line, but they were looking for more. With their development team still a ways away from creating a big vessel, they instead chose to release a PWC. Thus, the WaveRunner® was born. 

The Yamaha WaveRunner initially offered a sit-down design for maximum comfort and an open-stern design for better aesthetics. They were incredibly agile and provided some of the best performance on the market. Whether you were a novice or an expert, there was something for everyone to enjoy. This first model was so successful that it quickly catapulted the company to the head of the industry. 

Improving the Yamaha WaveRunner®

From this point on, Yamaha continued to improve the WaveRunner®, adding new features and enhancing the model with each passing year. Throughout the 1990s, the WaveRunner saw one innovation after the other and Yamaha became the top PWC manufacturer. 

In 2002, Yamaha introduced the first WaveRunner with a four-stroke engine, a first for the market as well. On top of the additional power, the WaveRunner maintained its smooth ride and even offered excellent fuel efficiency to help riders save money. It even came with a new hull design to improve stability, so there was no aspect of this machine that riders wouldn’t love.

The next major improvement came in 2008, when the Yamaha WaveRunner offered a new, more lightweight design, thanks to NanoXcel in the hull. NanoXcel is a composite material that’s 35% lighter than earlier materials that were used. It makes for a more agile and easier to control ride—so you can bet it was a hit right away.
