The History of Kawasaki Dirt Bikes

Known for its reliable dirt bikes, Kawasaki has a long history in Japan. Over the decades, its reputation has created a following all over the world. The Beginning

Kawasaki's roots go all the way back to 1878 with the establishment of Kawasaki Tsukiji Shipyard in Tokyo. In 1896, Kawasaki Heavy Industries was established and participated in the industry of shipbuilding, electricity generation, and the railroad business.

Kawasaki became involved in the aircraft industry in 1918 with the establishment of its Aircraft Department. Kawasaki became the first Japanese company to build a metal aircraft. In 1949, they started producing motorcycle engines.

 

First Motorcycle

Kawasaki built its first motorcycle in 1954 under the name Meihatsu. It had a KB-5 engine. Kawasaki bought Meguro, one of Japan's first motorcycle companies, and in 1963, they merged under the name Kawasaki Motorcycle Co. Ltd.

First Dirt Bike

In 1963, Kawasaki built a motocross version of their B8 street machine. It was called the Kawasaki B8-M. This bike started the legacy of Kawasaki dirt bikes. Its engine had 12 horsepower, and it won the top six places in 1963 at the All-Japanese Motocross Championships.

In order to create a motocrosser, the lights were removed and the expansion chamber, forks, seat, and handlebars were all changed. The tires were also replaced with knobby tires.

Although Kawasaki had its start in the shipyard business, over time it expanded into many industries. It merged with one of Japan's oldest motorcycle brands. Kawasaki also developed the first motocross bike in Japan which led to the creation of its dirt bike.
