While it’s better if you can contain your motorcycle rides to daylight hours, this won’t always be possible. Sometimes, you’re going to have to ride at night. Because of the riskiness of this endeavor, it’s important that you take as many safety precautions as you can to ensure you arrive at your nocturnal destination without incident.

Know the Risks

Riding at night is risky outside of the fact that there’s limited visibility. Often, drunk driving increases at night due to people going to bars and clubs, then trying to find their way home when they really shouldn’t be behind the wheel. Drivers are also much more likely to be fatigued and unfocused at night. Also, many animals are awake at night and may cross the road at random.

See & Be Seen

First and foremost, it’s crucial that you are visible on the roads at night. A small dark-colored motorcycle ridden on gray asphalt by a driver in a black helmet and black jacket is nigh-on impossible to see once the sun goes down. Wear light-colored riding gear and add LED lights to your motorcycle to ensure that you’re as bright and present as possible for other motorists. Even adding reflective tape to your dark gear can help.

Remain Vigilant

Scan the way ahead to watch for obstacles in your path. Keep an eye on drivers who seem to be swerving or going at stilted speeds, and give them a wide berth. Watch for potential exits you can make in the event of a vehicle suddenly swerving into your lane.
