Before riding your motorcycle, it’s crucial to perform a pre-ride inspection to ensure the proper functioning of your bike. After all, small mistakes can have big consequences on a motorcycle.

Why Should I Check My Motorcycle?

Before you hop on your motorcycle and hit the road, it's important to perform a quick pre-ride inspection to ensure your safety and the optimal performance of your bike. Some of the parts to check include:

Wheels

You can check the tire pressure using a tire pressure gauge. If the tire pressure is correct, give the tread and sidewalls of your tire a visual inspection. If you see any metal stuck in your tire from something you picked up on your last ride, or you see the metal bands that run the circumference of your tire, make sure to get your tires fixed immediately.

Fluids

Before every ride, it's essential to check the levels of various fluids to ensure your bike is running smoothly. Scan the ground under your motorcycle for any leaks or drips from the bike. If there are no leaks, check your oil. Then, check your coolant. The fluid will be visible on the side of the coolant reservoir. Finally, check your brake fluid in the front and rear reservoirs.

Brakes, Clutch & Throttle

Check the brake pads for any signs of wear or unevenness, and make sure the brake discs or drum brakes are in good condition. Next, give your clutch some attention. Look out for any abnormal grinding or slipping when shifting gears. Adjust the clutch lever to ensure it engages smoothly and provides proper control of the engine power. Lastly, inspect the throttle for smooth operation.

Chains & Sprockets

Look over the entire length of your chain for any rust, wear, or loose connections. If you have some spray lubricant on hand, an occasional blast of lube will do wonders to keep your chain dirt, grime, and corrosion-free.

Lights

Once you get your bike running, turn on your lights and then check your brakes and turn signal lights. They should all be bright and clear.

Riding Gear

Finally, make sure your riding gear is in order. Make sure your shoes or boots are tied tight and your helmet is buckled and secure. Don’t forget your sunglasses or goggles, and if you use a neck covering, make sure it is snugly wrapped in place and won’t come loose. Also, make sure you have rain gear in your saddlebags just in case the weather turns.
